Rhinopneumonitis is caused by the following herpesviruses: EHV-2, EHV-1 and EHV-4. They are highly contagious, but fortunately very sensitive to disinfectants.

Since mid-February 2021, this dangerous disease has been affecting horses since an outbreak was detected at Ces Valencia, where horses began to be affected by fever and ataxia. The FEI had to intervene and stop the competition. By the time the FEI took this measure, many jockeys had left the facilities of their own accord and spread the virus.

As of 5 March 2021, it can be stated that this ‘equine covid’ has paralysed our lives, preying on our poor horses and paralysing the lives of all professionals who are part of the industry (jockeys, trainers, etc.). The only professionals who have been able to continue with their activity are veterinarians, who are doing piecework trying to fight against a very aggressive strain which affects mares to a greater extent than male horses.

The International Federation for Equestrian Sports authorised the competition in Vejer de la Frontera, Gorla Minore and Vilamoura, but in a ‘bubble’, without anyone going in or out. Yesterday, 4 March, a horse that had been isolated for days in Montenmedio due to a slight fever, began to show symptoms of ataxia. The FEI, the Organising Committee and Health Authorities, have determined that the Sunshine Tour will end this Sunday, 7 March, 3 weeks earlier than planned.

The only thing to do is to prevent, to be aware that it is very contagious, not to use the same utensils on different horses, not to move them from place to place, vaccinate them if possible (although the vaccine is out of stock and the current strain is more virulent) and take their temperature daily to notify the veterinarian as soon as it is over 38.
